Manufacturer's description & specs

The listing is for a Mahindra 1640 HST Cab with the matching 1640L front loader. This is the top model in Mahindra's 1600 Series of compact utility tractors. Mahindra says the 1600 Series is built for tough jobs around a ranch, hunting property, park or large estate. It sums up the series as a compact design with strong lift capacity and deluxe features. Mahindra lists hobby and specialty farming, rural property, equine work, home use and grounds or municipal maintenance as ideal uses.

The 1640 has a low-RPM four-cylinder diesel. Mahindra says this design runs quieter and smoother, uses less fuel and lasts longer. The tractor has no diesel particulate filter. Every 1600 Series cab comes with heat and air conditioning, glass all around for visibility, front and rear work lights and front and rear wipers. The mComfort seat, cup holder, 12V socket and mounted toolbox are standard. Extendable flex links are standard on the 1640's 3-point hitch.

Top selling points

  • A cab for all four seasons. Heat and air conditioning are standard, along with glass all around, front and rear work lights and front and rear wipers. That makes snow clearing in a Berkshire winter and mowing in July much more comfortable.
  • Built to start in the cold. The 925 cold-cranking-amp battery is meant to start the engine reliably in winter. Mahindra suggests pairing it with one of its snow removal attachments.
  • Four-cylinder diesel with no DPF. The 38.7 hp four-cylinder runs at low RPM and has no diesel particulate filter. Mahindra says that means less fuel use, quieter running and less maintenance hassle.
  • Strong 3-point hitch. The hitch is rated for 2,646 lb at the lift ends. It has telescoping stabilizers and standard extendable flex links, which make hooking up Category I implements easier.
  • Useful loader reach. The 1640L loader lifts 1,650 lb at the pin at full height and reaches 99 inches. Mahindra says that is enough to stack round bales two rows high or load tall feed mixer wagons.
  • Heavy for its size. At about 3,627 lb, the tractor has the weight Mahindra credits with better traction and stability. It still keeps a 9.2-foot turning radius and a 62-inch width.
  • Easy daily service. The hood and side panels lift up, so you can get to the battery, air filter and fuel tank without tools.

How it stacks up against the competition

Buyers looking at the 1640 HST Cab often compare it with other cab tractors around 40 hp. The usual ones are the LS MT240HE, the Kioti CK4010 series and the Kubota L3902 or L3901 range. Before deciding, check each manufacturer's current spec sheet, because the standard equipment differs from brand to brand. Here is where the Mahindra holds up well:

  • Against the LS MT240HE: The LS uses a turbocharged engine, while the Mahindra uses a naturally aspirated four-cylinder diesel. Some forum members say they like the 1640's simpler non-turbo engine. Others prefer a turbo, so it comes down to your priorities.
  • Cold-weather equipment: Every 1640 HST Cab comes with a 925 CCA battery, a 90 A alternator and heat and AC. That suits buyers who plan to use the tractor mostly for snow.
  • Hitch and weight: The 1640 has a 2,646 lb 3-point rating at the lift ends, weighs 3,627 lb and comes with extendable flex links. That gives it a solid base for running Category I implements.

We could not confirm current published specs for the Kubota and Kioti models, so we aren't making number-for-number claims against them. Ask us for a side-by-side test drive.

What owners are saying

Feedback from owners and reviewers points to a few things people like about the 1640:

  • One owner who bought a 1640 HST Cab with a backhoe called it strong and impressive for a 40 hp tractor. They said it feels stable, puts you up high and has heat and air conditioning they really appreciate.
  • The same owner liked being able to open the rear cab window and said they had enjoyed the tractor so far for driveway grading, digging and box blade work.
  • Forum members comparing the 1640 with other brands have called its naturally aspirated four-cylinder a nice engine.
  • One equipment review site says the 1640 HST Cab is praised for its solid build, strong lift capacity and easy-to-use controls.
  • Another owner said the tractor carried a loaded 4-in-1 bucket without trouble.
